2020 Why is this year special?
The year 2020 is all about Thomas Becket.
When one tries to find his birth date, scholars are divided. He was born in Cheapside, London, on 21 December, the feast day of St Thomas the Apostle. The son of Gilbert and Matilda Beket, several contemporary reports confirm his birthDAY. However, the year of his birth is not known with certainty. Some people say it was 1119, others offer years from 1115 to 1118. However, in The Lives of Thomas Becket, Michael Staunton suggests he might have been born in 1120 (amongst the other years).
What is more certain is the date of his death. He was butchered in Canterbury Cathedral by Reginald FitzUrse, Hugh de Morville, William de Tracy and Richard le Breton on 29 December, 1170.
2020 is therefore potentially the 900th anniversary of Becket's birth, but definitely the 850th anniversary of his death.
We hope to feature a number of special events in Farnham and along the route celebrating this anniversary. Watch this space for more information.
